Africa-Japan:
New opportunities for cooperation, and what role for the
African Development Bank?
A decade after world leaders committed themselves to the eight Millennium Goals, including the eradication of extreme poverty and reducing the spread of HIV/Aids and other infectious diseases, the huge economic and social challenges facing Africa are in danger of being forgotten.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) commits about US$3 billion every year to African countries –just 6% of all development aid – but its partnerships outside Africa will be pivotal in enabling it to commit more resources to key areas, such as infectious diseases, education, poverty and the role of women.
As an AfDB member, Japan has a vital role to play in ensuring that the bank has the capital it needs to make a difference.
The AfDB's president, Donald Kaberuka, will be in Japan from 2-6 April for meetings with high-level officials, including the finance, foreign and trade ministers, as well as Sadako Ogata, the president of Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Kaberuka, who became AfDB president in 2005, was Rwanda's finance and economic planning minister from 1997-2005, and is acknowledged as the principal architect of the country's successful postwar reconstruction and economic reform programme. Educated in Tanzania and the UK, he had more than 12 years' experience in the banking industry, trade and finance, the international commodity business and development sector before joining the government.
