Summary:
PROFESSIONAL LUNCHEON
Lester Brown,
President, The Earth Policy Institute
The speech and Q & A will be in English
Description:As the world's population continues to grow, we are entering a new food era, argues Lester Brown. This era will be marked by higher food prices and growing numbers of hungry people. Intensifying competition for land and water is crossing national boundaries as food-importing countries are buying or leasing vast tracts of land in other countries to grow food for their own populations.
The situation is not just caused by an increase in population but by falling water tables, rising temperatures, melting glaciers and grain being used to produce fuel for cars.
Brown, who has been at the forefront of the global environmental movement for decades, is calling on developed countries like Japan to help boost food production in developing countries, rather than purchasing land for their own benefit.
He will be at the FCCJ on May 26, to talk about food security issues and the problems he foresees as countries compete for the planet's resources.
Brown became adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 1964 after earning masters degrees from the University of Maryland and Harvard. In 1974, with the support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, he founded the Worldwatch Institute, the first research institute in the world devoted to the analysis of global environmental issues. Brown has authored and co-authored 50 books. In May 2001, he founded the Earth Policy Institute to provide a vision and road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy, and is currently President and Senior Researcher. He is the recipient of many prizes and awards, including the United Nations Environment Prize and World Wide Fund for Nature Gold Medal.
