As the fight against poverty steps up, charities are becoming increasing innovative in raising money. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation(GAVI), a health partnership that counts support from some of the biggest names in aid, has found a unique way to get the funds it needs. Through its International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm), it has turned to the world's capital markets. Japanese investors alone have contributed more than US$1.2 billion through investments in five separate
"uridashi" bond offerings.

The group is in Japan this week as part of its push to raise an additional US$2.6 billion in funding it needs to introduce new vaccines that could save some of the millions of lives that are claimed by pneumonia and diarrhoea each year.

David Ferreira, managing director of innovative finance at the group, will be at the FCCJ on May 20, to explain this financing method. Joelle Tanguy, managing director of external relations, who has extensive experience in global health advocacy, resource mobilization, and public affairs, will join him. Together they will address financing, GAVI's work and also speak to some of the challenges facing charities and non-profits in raising money from an increasing wealthy world.

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation is a global health partnership aimed at saving the lives of children, reducing suffering and improving people's lives through increasing access to vaccines in the world's poorest countries. Its members include some of the biggest names in international aid, including UNICEF, WHO, the World Bank, developing world and donor governments, private sector philanthropists such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, developed and developing country vaccine manufacturers, research and technical institutes, and civil society organizations.
