Hiroyuki Sanada Stars In 'Shogun', A New Period Drama Set In Japan In the Year 1600
Shogun, a 10-part historical drama that will premiere on the Disney+ streaming service on February 27, is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war.

The American drama, produced by FX and marketed internationally by The Walt Disney Company, is an original adaptation of James Clavell's best-selling novel of the same name in 1975. The limited series involves many highly-decorated Japanese cast and crew members including the award-winning Hiroyuki Sanada, who is best-known to foreign audiences for his roles in such international productions as The Last Samurai (2003),47 Ronin (2013), and Bullet Train (2022).

Sanada stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, whose reign is endangered as his political enemies unite against him. But John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), the captain of marooned European ship in a nearby fishing village, arrives bearing secrets that could help the daimyo tip the scales of power. Their fates are linked to their translator Toda Mariko, a Christian noblewoman with dishonorable family ties. The story is loosely adapted from real events, with Blackthorne's character based on the historical English navigator William Adams. He became a samurai under the powerful warlordTokugawa Ieyasu, on whom Yoshii Toranaga's character is based.

Shogun's showrunners including Justin Marks, who was behind the story for Top Gun: Maverick (2022), and lead cast members including Sanada will come to the FCCJ to discuss their new production one week before its launch.
