PRESS CONFERENCE
Shibuya Kaho, Author, Content creator

15:00-16:00 Thursday, April 18, 2024
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Do Japan's Pornography Laws Do Enough to Protect Talent?

Shibuya, author of "The Japanese Porn Industry Unmasked," will give a glimpse inside disputes over how sex video makers approach the rights of performers. She worked in the industry before leaving and becoming an author. She has also become an online content creator with 1.2 million Instagram followers. Shibuya's background includes working as a reporter covering baseball for Tokyo Sports.

She will also discuss her lawsuit against a video production company for damages over the unauthorized release of footage from the 750 appearances in videos she made in before retiring in 2018. The suit seeks millions of yen in compensation for damages because the videos were released without the mosaic effects required to meet Japanese censorship standards.

In 2022, Japan passed a law giving porn performers more rights. The legislation came in response to reports that talent was being coerced and defrauded. Shibuya has made the case that talent is still vulnerable.
