Description:To All Members:
How far can a non-Japanese employee go in corporate Japan–and how far should he or she want to go? Is the life of a corporate warrior in Japan Inc. as tough as it is made out to be?
These and other questions will be answered by Niall Murtagh, author of "The Blue-Eyed Salaryman." Niall grew up in Ireland, but spent most of his 20s on the road in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, hitchhiking over 25,000 km through 60 odd countries. He came to Japan in 1986, and after completing a language course in Osaka and a PhD program in Tokyo Institute of Technology, he became a salaryman. He slowly moved up the corporate ladder from contract to permanent status and then to manager class in one of the largest of the Mitsubishi companies, before quitting in early 2005 to work as an independent translator and consultant.
In addition to numerous academic ublications, he has lectured on Japanese corporate culture at Sheffield University (UK), Temple University (Tokyo), Kokugakuin University (Tokyo) and elsewhere. His book has been featured by BBC radio, Newsweek (Japan), Bloomberg, The Times (UK), and numerous other publications. His website is at: www.niallmurtagh.info
