Takumi Shibata
Deputy President & COO, Nomura Holdings, Inc.

Language:

The speech and Q&A will be in English

Description:

Takumi Shibata, deputy president and chief operating officer of Nomura Holdings, was a driving force behind the acquisition of the Asian and European operations of failed Wall Street giant Lehman Brothers in what amounts to the most ambitious expansion attempt yet by a Japanese financial firm to become a full-fledged international investment bank.

Bringing together two very different operations and cultures has put Nomura's people and the former Lehman staff through testing changes and brought scrutiny of the men who drove the deal, Shibata and Nomura chief executive Kenichi Watanabe.

Shibata will give the FCCJ an account of what's been happening at Nomura in the 14 months since the Lehman acquisition and what needs to be done for the merger to succeed.

A graduate of Keio University and Harvard Business School, Shibata has been with Japan's largest brokerage for 32 years. He's run Nomura's European and global investment banking businesses and, in an unusually international career for a senior Japanese financial executive, worked 17 years overseas, in London, Hong Kong and Boston.
