International child-abduction resolution breakthrough?
Japanese table tennis star Ai Fukuhara will make a brief statement about a child-custody agreement she forged with ex-husband Chiang Hung-chieh of Taiwan. Attorneys for Fukuhara and Chiang will answer questions about the agreement.
Their pact follows high-profile court battles in which Chiang alleged Fukuhara had abducted their son, taking him to Japan in violation of a joint-custody agreement set in Taiwan.
Fukuhara and the attorneys are speaking out at the club days after Japan's government approved a bill allowing joint custody of children for divorced couples for the first time. Child-abduction disputes in which a Japanese spouse spirits a child across borders against their former or current partner's wishes have drawn rising attention in recent years.
The resolution of this case may provide fresh context for understanding Japan's child-custody laws and practices.
