Description:

The year 2010 is already shaping up as another busy year for foreign aid experts and workers, including those at the International Committee of the Red Cross, as exemplified by the deadly earthquake that struck Haiti.

ICRC personnel are helping people affected by armed conflict and other forms of violence in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and the Occupied Territories, Pakistan and in other conflict-torn countries.

Pierre Kraehenbuehl, the organization's director of operations, will speak on its efforts in the world's hot spots as the ICRC's Tokyo office marks its first anniversary. The ICRC believes the Japanese government and the Japanese Red Cross is accepting it as a strategic partner.

Japan, which has tried to become a full-fledged global power on the international stage, has Japanese nationals on ICRC missions to Iraq, the Philippines, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, while Japanese Red Cross medical staff are working with ICRC missions in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.

Kraehenbuehl's timely appearance at the club comes shortly before the London Conference on Afghanistan.
