Description:What's Next? Ichiro Ozawa VS. Prosecutors
While Ichiro Ozawa, secretary general of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the funding scandal that led to the indictment of three of his current and former secretaries, it is widely believed that the game is far from over.
A new chapter of the "politics and money" drama in Japan's halls of power is likely to unfold as early as this spring, when Ozawa -the real power behind the government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama - has to decide whether or not he should stay on as DPJ secretary general and chief campaign strategist ahead of the House of Councillors election this summer.
Nobuo Gohara, a lawyer and professor of Meijo University, will speak on the looming showdown between Ozawa and prosecutors, based on his experience as a former prosecutor and compliance expert. He has been critical of Tokyo prosecutors who have investigated the funding scandal.
Akira Uozumi, a freelancer and non-fiction writer, exhaustively covered the Recruit scandal and other high-profile cases as a Kyodo News reporter. He has written many books on special prosecutors and prominent politicians, such as Hiromu Nonaka, and denounced the way Japanese prosecutors have been doing their jobs.
Their appearance at the club will be the latest in a series of timely events to examine the Japanese political landscape and its domestic and global implications.
