"U.S.-Japan Agricultural Relations"

*Simultaneous interpretation will be provided and the text of this notice has been revised.

United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is coming to Japan to promote, among other bilateral agricultural ties, the “Partners in Agriculture” program which runs through May in Tokyo and Yamanashi Prefecture. Vilsack is a former Governor of Iowa, which has sister-state relationship with Yamanashi Prefecture.

Despite occasional trade disputes between Japan and the United States, two-way trade in agricultural products remains immense and is likely to grow further. The bilateral relationship in agriculture is valuable to both countries and President Barack Obama is sending Vilsack to Japan to further boost U.S. exports of beef and other farm products.

Vilsack is aspiring to become a champion for rural Americans by (as Obama said in picking him as USDA chief) leading "with vision, promoting biotech to strengthen our farmers and fostering an agricultural economy of the future that not only grows the food we eat, but the energy we use."
