Rajmohan Gandhi is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Indian independence movement and was concerned with the erosion of religious harmony in post-partitioned British India. But while he is the grandson and a disciple of the Mahatma, this is not Rajmohan's defining characteristic.

An award winning author, historian and a former member of the Upper House of India's parliament, Rajmahon has been associated with the movement of moral re-armament since the mid-1950s and has always been on the frontlines when it comes to upholding the rights of the people. During India's 1975-77 emergency, he actively campaigned for the restoration of democratic rights through the publication he edited. He led India's delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in 1990 and later joined the renowned Indian think tank, the Center for Policy Research, New Delhi. He was a Research Professor of the Center from 1992 to 2000. Currently he is a Research Professor at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois.

For years he has worked for India-Pakistan and Hindu-Muslim reconciliation. Since 9/11, he has also striven to address the divide between the West and the world of Islam. His talk at the Club will focus on the problem of understanding Islam in the West, as well as the possibilities of reconciliation between South Asia's two main adversaries: India and Pakistan. As a direct descendant of the Mahatma, his grandfather will also be a prominent topic.
