The New York Times called this film "an intriguing cross-cultural experiment,"and the FCCJ is honored to provide this sneak preview so that our members can be among the first in Japan to see just how intriguing it is.

Filmed entirely on location in California with an all-American crew, Sideways is the Japanese "reimagining" of the 2005 Academy Award-winning film of the same title. It is directed by Cellin Gluck, an American born and raised in Japan, and features a soundtrack composed and supervised
by Hawaiian-born ukulele artist Jake Shimabukuro, featuring such 1980's hits as Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time."

A coming-of-age movie for those past the point of no return, Sideways is the heartwarming tale of two old friends, on a journey to rediscover their friendship.

Michio (Fumiyo Kohinata) is a struggling scriptwriter. His best friend, Daisuke (Katsuhisa Namase), is about to get married and has planned one last fling as a bachelor. Together, they venture out on a weeklong road trip through Napa Valley, where they serendipitously meet up with Mayuko
(Kyoka Suzuki), whom Michio had tutored-and fallen in love with-20 years earlier as an exchange student. Also along for the ride is Mayuko's free-spirited friend Mina (Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi), who runs a local eatery.

Sideways was coproduced by Fuji TV, purveyor of Bayside Shakedown 2, Japan's highest grossing live action film ever, and 20th Century Fox, producer of the all-time box office champion Titanic.

Please reserve by noon on the day of the event at the reception desk (3211-3161) or online at http://www.fccj.or.jp. Those without reservations will be turned away once available seats are filled.

You may attend the film without joining us for the wine event. Doors will open at 6:50 for the film. Please reserve at the reception desk as above. All movie screenings are private, noncommercial events restricted to FCCJ members and their guests.
