Description:Compared to many victims of "enzai" (false accusations or bad raps), Haruhiko Kataoka is a lucky man. Accused -- he says falsely -- of being responsible for the unwarranted death of a "shirobai'' (white-motorcycle policeman), he spent 14 months in prison. His time in prison may be short compared with high-profile falsely accused defendants Sakae Menda and Toshikazu Sugaya, who were found innocent after many years behind bars. He insists, however, he is innocent.
Kataoka wants a new trial to clear his name. And he is accusing the police of having deliberately forged evidence.
Toshiro Semba, a former police officer, says Kataoka is not the only person who has been wrongly accused of wrongdoing and forced to serve time. He has written several best-selling books on the "routine" wrongdoings of Japanese police -- slush funds, intimidation and corruption, to name just a few. Semba worked at 10 different police stations, where he says he was told to forge receipts on "ghost" informants and create slush funds to be used by senior police officers.
Kataoka and Semba will come to the club with Gen Takahashi who produced and directed the film ''Confession of a Dog,'' which focused on police corruption and the mainstream media's complicity. Part of the movie was shot inside our club during a real press conference.
