Description:

Horizontal Asia: How the Rise of China and India Is Redefining Asia

For much of the 20th century, the West's concept of Asia largely focused on its eastern coastline. Yet today, this perspective obscures rather than illuminates the emerging geo-strategic realities. It is a traditional approach that tells more about the "vertical" geography of the countries rather than the more revealing economic and political links and inter-relationships that have formed.

A more accurate way to think about the region is "horizontally," argue Anthony Bubalo and Malcolm Cook, researchers at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Australia. In their much-discussed analysis, the rise of China and India and the rapidly growing web of economic and strategic connections across the continent -- from East Asia to the Middle East -- are redefining Asia on a "horizontal" basis. And that has major implications for the West.

Please join us for a fascinating look at how the Asia region, and Japan's place within it, is changing.
