Description:

Last week, Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency announced it had tentatively approved the restart of two reactors at Kansai Electric Power's Oi plant in Fukui Prefecture following a series of stress tests to determine their safety. The reactors have been shut down since March 11th of last year and would be the first in Japan to be restarted following the government-ordered stress tests.

With the International Atomic Energy Agency, visiting Japan this week to discuss the stress tests, expected to do little more than rubberstamp the NISA decision, concern is growing that intense pressure by the nuclear power lobby to restart Japan's idled reactors means the government is cutting corners on the stress tests. Masashi Goto and Hiromitsu Ino, two members of an experts' committee advising NISA will speak at FCCJ on January 27 about the problems with the tests and their methodology.
