Venture funds and big corporations pour billions of dollars into a high-flying dream: air taxis and flying cars. A leading Japanese contender is SkyDrive, a Toyota spin-off of sorts: In only four years, the team wants to start a commercial service in Osaka at the World Expo 2025. If it succeeds, it would be an incredible journey for a young company that started as a weekend project by Toyota engineers. In 2012, a few enthusiasts set up Cartivator, a startup of volunteers that soon became a focal point of the official vision to make Japanese companies the leading provider of drone and air taxis services. In 2018, the team founded SkyDrive as its commercial arm. Following a short maiden flight, the startup has collected US$45 million from big Japanese corporations, a lot of public goodwill and support from Osaka City. Join the FCCJ to hear from SkyDrive-CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa how he wants to repay this trust and contribute to a revolution in air mobility.
