Leadership Lessons from the Life of Tsuda Umeko

Join playwright Kodama Hiroko and pianist Sato Keiko for a stimulating afternoon of learning about female leadership. This special luncheon lecture focuses on the inspiring leadership of Tsuda Umeko, a pioneering figure in women’s education during Japan’s transformative Meiji period. We will explore her remarkable life and the enduring leadership lessons drawn from her vision and life’s work.

Tsuda Umeko’s journey began in 1871, at the age of six, when she became one of the first Japanese women to study in the United States as part of the Iwakura Mission. Her time abroad opened her eyes to the possibilities of education for women, far beyond the restrictive norms she encountered upon her return to Japan in 1882. Dissatisfied with the prevailing notion that education for women was simply to mold them into obedient wives, Tsuda set out to change this paradigm.

Determined to empower women through education, she raised funds to establish scholarships for Japanese women to study abroad. Her tireless efforts culminated in the founding of Joshi Eigaku Juku (now Tsuda University), which offered liberal arts education to women regardless of their background.

Tsuda’s leadership was not about power, but about empathy, vision, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of others. Her fusion of Eastern values and Western educational ideals remains a beacon of balanced leadership, inspiring generations of women to live well-rounded, purposeful lives. Please join us to reflect on Tsuda Umeko’s legacy and the timeless leadership lessons we can all learn from her. The lecture will be in Japanese with English interpretation. 津田梅子の生涯に学ぶリーダーシップの教訓

脚本家のこだまひろこさんとピアニストの佐藤 慶子さんの演奏を通して女性によるリーダーシップを探求する学びの午後のひとときに御参加下さい。このスペシャルランチイベントは、日本の変革期であった明治時代に、女性教育の先駆者として、偉大な役割を果たした津田 梅子の感動的な生涯と情熱に燃えたビジョンとライフワークから引き出された不朽のリーダーシップに迫ります。

津田 梅子の人生は、1871年、6歳の時に岩倉使節団の一員として、日本人女性として初めて米国に留学した時に始まりました。 海外での生活は、1882年に日本に戻った時に、彼女の予想をはるかに超えた制限の多い女性の教育に驚き、新たな可能性に目を向け始めました。女性に対する教育とは、従順な妻となるよう形　作ることだという当時の考え方に不満を抱いた津田 梅子は、1989年に再び米国に戻り、大学に入学し、学位をとり、その後、日本の女子教育に生涯を捧げる決意をしました。そうして日本人女性が海外で学べる奨学金を設立するための資金を集め始めたのです。彼女のたゆまぬ努力は、女性の社会的背景に関係なく教育を提供した女子英学塾(現津田塾大学)の創設という形で結実しました。

津田 梅子のリーダーシップは権力ではなく、共感、ビジョン、そして他者の向上に対する揺るぎない献身に基づくものでした。彼女が融合させた東洋の価値観と西洋の教育理念は、バランスのとれたリーダーシップの指針であり、何世代にもわたる女性たちに、充実した目的のある人生を送るよう鼓舞し続けています。
