'Host Clubs Accused of Forcing Women Into Prostitution'

Most foreign correspondents who come to Tokyo have covered the city's colorful host and hostess clubs, where attractive young staff cater to the whims of clients while selling overpriced booze. But the reality behind some of these clubs can be disturbing. Many are run by yakuza gangsters who are adept at getting star-struck female clients to run up huge tabs, say speakers. A growing number of women have been forced into prostitution to pay for these bills, which can run into tens of thousands of dollars, they say.

The Council of Fathers and Mothers to Protect Youth, formed by a group of concerned parents, deals with distressed parents looking for help and advice. Parents say their daughters have been psychologically controlled and can face threats of physical harm. The problem is growing: since January, the group says they have dealt with over 150 consultations, mostly from outside Tokyo. A petition has been launched to ban tabs by host clubs and the issue has been raised in the Diet where a bill has been discussed to rein in malicious hosts.
