Deep Dive Series: COVID-19 Delta Variant- New approaches needed

8:30-10:00 a.m., Friday, September 3, 2021
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Current levels of infection with the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus and the consequent inability of the health system to cope with further increases in numbers of people requiring isolation, oxygen supplies and hospitalization, show that approaches taken by the government up to now have to change.

How can Japan make testing more widely available, and increase hospital capacity for COVID patients? What progress is being made in vaccination efforts and in tackling the increased risk to unvaccinated young people? Are tighter lockdowns the answer?

The Deep Dive Task Force has secured the expertise of two eminent medical specialists to address these and other key issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa: A graduate of the University of Tokyo, School of Medicine, Dr. Kurokawa spent 15 years in the US from 1969-84, where he was professor of medicine at UCLA. He was Dean of Tokai University Medical School, President of the Science Council of Japan, and Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan.  He was Chair of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission by the National Diet of Japan. Now he is Vice Chair of the World Dementia Council established by G8 (now G7) London Dementia Summit in 2013 and Chair of the Covid-19 AI Advisory Board appointed by Minister Nishimura in July 2020.
