Japan's emissions pledges in light of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference

Delegates to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference will gather in Glasgow starting 31 October to review progress toward meeting the Paris Agreement objectives of limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius and preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius to protect life on Earth from the worst effects of climate change. Experts say the world is not on track to meet those targets and more urgent efforts are needed.

Japan has stated it will strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 46% from 2013 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Given Japan's recent coal-fired power plant building spree, are those targets realistic?

Award winning environmental activist Kimiko Hirata will come to the FCCJ to discuss that question. Hirata is currently International Director of Kiko Network, a Japan-based non-governmental organization fighting climate change by pushing for major societal changes. In recent years, Hirata has led Kiko's efforts to get Japan to reverse its growing reliance on coal-fired power. The organization claims its activism helped lead to the cancelation of one-third of the plants that had been planned. Earlier this year, Hirata was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for her “sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment.”
