PRESS CONFERENCE
Damien Veron, Brother of Tiphaine Veron

13:00-14:00 Friday, November 24, 2023
(The speech and Q & A will be in French with English interpretation.)

What Happened to Tiphaine Véron?

A French national, Tiphaine Veron was on vacation in Japan when she vanished on July 29, 2018 in the tourist town of Nikko. She sent photos from her Nikko trip the day before she disappeared but nothing has been heard from her since. The Japanese police say she went for a walk beside a river and drowned after falling in.  Her family believes she was abducted and murdered. They have expressed growing frustration with how the Japanese authorities have handled the case and claim to have found numerous inconsistencies in the official account of what happened.

Tiphaine Veron's brother Damien Veron has written a book, Tiphaine ou es-tu? (Tiphaine – Where Are You?) with his sister Sibylle, a journalist. They ask why the UN and French authorities are calling for a criminal investigation while the Japanese police are dragging their feet. In desperation, they have begun contacting local journalists to probe the disappearance of their sister.  Damien Veron will come to the FCCJ to explain the background to the case and what he believes should be done.
