PRESS CONFERENCE
Why Japan wants to continue whaling
Hideki Tokoro, CEO Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha,Ltd.
11:00-12:00 Wednesday, October 16, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
The arrest of environmental activist Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, in Greenland on July 21st and the request for his extradition to Japan have sparked an outpouring of international support for the anti-whaling campaigner. The incident has also revived questions about Japanese whaling.
How does Japan justify continuing to hunt cetaceans? Do Japanese people really want to eat whale meat? What has happened since commercial whaling resumed in Japanese waters in 2019? Why can't the two sides come to the same conclusions about the size of the whale population? Why does Japan regard Paul Watson as a dangerous figure?
Hideki Tokoro, CEO of Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha, Ltd., will come to the club with answers to these questions. Kyodo Senpaku owns Japan's largest whaling fleet, including the factory ship Kangei Maru which is the target of Paul Watson's latest campaign. And Tokoro has emerged as Japan's leading proponent of commercial whaling.
