Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare: "The Life and Death of King John"

"Mad world, mad kings, mad composition!"
What are the political and human consequences of two rival candidates laying claim to the throne? How are individuals affected by power politics? This is a rare chance to see a play printed for the first time in the First Folio, whose 400th anniversary we celebrate this year.
Centered around ‘Bad King John’, the 12th-century psychopath of Robin Hood and Magna Carta fame (although neither is mentioned in the play) and the French King and Dauphin, it also features two powerful royal mothers and a heroic illegitimate prince.
The 1984 BBC version is directed by David Giles. The King is played by Leonard Rossiter (The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin) in his last performance; Queen Elinor by Mary Morris (Queen Margaret in An Age of Kings); Constance by Claire Bloom (Limelight, The King's Speech); Hubert by John Thaw (Inspector Morse); The Bastard by George Costigan (Rita, Sue and Bob Too); and Salisbury by John Castle (Man of La Mancha, RoboCop 3). Our presenter is Stuart Varnam- Atkin.
