PRESS CONFERENCE:
Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine

09:45-10:45 Tuesday, February 20, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

Ending the Ukraine War
Almost two years after Russia's invasion, the war in Ukraine grinds on. Roughly ten thousand Ukrainian civilians have died, and almost half a million Russian and Ukrainian troops had been killed or injured as of August, according to The New York Times. The United States alone has sent $110 billion in mainly military aid to Ukraine since the invasion began in February 2022. But the latest package is stalled in Congress as more US lawmakers oppose funding the war. Without US help, experts say Ukraine's resistance will collapse.

Against this background, Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine has come to Japan to discuss what happens once the war finally ends and recovery – estimated to cost $411 billion – begins. He is looking for help from Japan in rebuilding Ukraine's shattered infrastructure and industry. Despite the chaos and death unleashed by Russia's invasion, and the threat to US funding, Shmyhal says he is optimistic that his country will emerge victorious.

Is he right? What will Ukraine look like if the Russian troops depart? And what role will Japan play in the coming month and years? Few are better qualified than Shmyhal, who has been prime minister since March 2020, to answer these critical questions. Come along and hear what he has to say.
