The Elders is an independent organization of former heads of state founded in July 2007 by the late South African President Nelson Mandela, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and others to work for peace, justice, human rights, and sustainability. The Elders engage in bringing peace to conflicts as diverse as Darfur, Cyprus, Zimbabwe, the Middle East, North Korea, Ivory Coast, and Myanmar.
The Elders' Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative calls on nuclear-armed states, particularly the five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, to commit to "minimization" agenda offering a realistic long-term path to the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
A delegation including H.E. Ban Ki-moon; Juan Manuel Santos; the former President of Colombia and Nobel Peace Prize laureate; Hina Jilani, a human rights advocate from Pakistan; Ernesto Zedillo, former President of Mexico, and Elbegdorj Tsakhia, former President and Prime Minister of Mongolia, will visit Hiroshima and Tokyo in various events to mark the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and World War II.
The FCCJ is proud to welcome the Elders to discuss their campaign against nuclear weapons, as well as share perspectives on the shortcomings of the multilateral system and lack of leadership in global affairs.
