The United States has banned all Russian energy imports and called on allies to do likewise in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine. Further sanctions are possible, and impact on import-dependent nations like Japan is huge.

The situation on the Ukrainian frontline changes by the hour, and the longer-term effects of the sanctions on global markets and economies are far from clear. Some market players see oil prices surging to $200-$300 per barrel.

The FCCJ has invited a panel of four experts on energy and Russian affairs to discuss all this and the implications for energy supplies to Japan and the world at large.

Taisuke Abiru is a Senior Research Fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. He previously held positions at the Moscow office of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the Tokyo Foundation.

Professor Koichiro Tanaka of Keio University is an ex-managing director of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and follows energy security in Japan and the Middle East.

Tom O'Sullivan is the founder of the energy consultancy Mathyos Global Advisory consultancy. He will focus on energy issues in Northeast Asia, including the outlook for Japanese investments in the Sakhalin region.

Yuriy Humber is president of research firm Yuri Group and founder of the Japan NRG platform. A UK national born in Belarus, he previously covered Russian energy markets for Bloomberg News in Moscow.
