PRESS CONFERENCE
Mikhail Yurievich Galuzin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Japan

14:00-15:00 Friday, February 24, 2022
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

The Ukraine crisis escalated to a new stage after Russia officially recognized two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent states. President Vladimir Putin secured parliament's approval to send Russian troops abroad as what he called "peacekeepers" and announced a special military operation in Ukraine.

Seeing this move as a violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine and Russia's preparation for invasion of the country, the US and its allies, including Japan, imposed new sanctions on Russian banks, sovereign debt, and Russian individuals, with more such sanctions expected. Following Moscow's actions, Berlin froze certification of the US$11 billion Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, despite soaring prices for the fuel in Europe.

Russia has repeated that it has no intention to occupy Ukraine, but refers to what it calls an intention to "demilitarize and de-nazify" its neighbor. Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Japan Mikhail Galuzin is ready to answer questions about Russia's actions and share his government's vision of the situation.
