PRESS CONFERENCE
Paul Mashatile, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa
14:30-15:30 Wednesday, March 19, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.
South Africa is one of a number of countries that have faced scrutiny and criticism by the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, but the government says it will not take part in "counterproductive megaphone diplomacy," after a social media post by Trump claimed that Pretoria was confiscating land. The U.S. has frozen financial aid to the country, and some see Japan as a key player that may step in with assistance for South Africa and the continent.
Paul Mashatile, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, will come to the FCCJ on March 19 to update on developments at home and the bilateral relationship with Japan. Recently, South Africa hosted a Japanese delegation for the G20 meeting in Cape Town, and the sides noted the long-standing friendship and collaboration between Japan and South Africa as essential factor in advancement of peace, prosperity, and mutual understanding. Masatile noted in February the strengthening of South Africa-Japan cooperation in several sectors including politics, trade and investment, science and innovation, education, energy and development cooperation. He is certain to elaborate further in his visit to the Club on March 19.
