The Ukraine Crisis One Year On

Hours after Russia began missile and artillery strikes against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Kyiv's envoy to Japan, Sergey Korsunsky, held an emergency press conference at the FCCJ giving details about the situation on the ground and potential threats to the nation's nuclear infrastructure. One year later, Ukraine remains resolute in its defiance in the face of continued attacks by Russia. Shipments by Western allies of ever larger, more sophisticated weapons into Ukraine have raised the threat of escalation, while a corruption scandal in Kyiv has rekindled concerns about how the aid and tools of war are being managed.

Japan has stood with its allies in support of Ukraine, sending aid and taking in refugees. In doing so it has risked access to critical energy supplies in the Russian region, while the conflict exacerbates the nation's sharpest inflation rate in more than 40 years. Ambassadors return to the FCCJ on the anniversary of the invasion to explain how the conflict is evolving and the stakes for Japan and its partners.
