(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

"Prospects for China and the World after the Communist Party Congress"

Xi Jinping won an unprecedented third five-year term as president of the People's Republic of China during last month's Communist Party Congress. Xi has now solidified his control over the country, leaving little space for rivals, civil organizations or dissent. What does this portend for China's internal affairs and the country's international relationships? Wang Dan, one of the leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and now a scholar of Chinese history, will share his thoughts on China's future in this press conference.

Wang gained international attention as a Peking University student advocating for democratic reforms in China. After the bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown, Wang was arrested and spent 6 years in prison. After his release he was again arrested, in 1995, for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party and handed an 11 year prison sentence. In 1998 he was released and exiled to the United States. He earned a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University in 2008 and has since pursued an academic career.
