Nissan is one of the most storied brands in the global auto industry. Underscoring its status in the nation's economy, the company's very name is an amalgam of the Japanese characters for "Japan" and "industry." For much of its history, Nissan was the country's second-largest automaker.

But ever since the 2018 arrest and ouster of longtime boss Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor Co. has been in trouble. Sales and profits have plunged and Nissan, long ago surpassed by Honda as Japan's No. 2, has spiraled downward into its worst financial crisis since flirting with bankruptcy in 1999, with the company's credit rating slumping to junk status.

Surprise talks to merge Nissan with Honda, which could have created the world's third-largest auto group, spectacularly imploded just two months into negotiations, as both sides haggled over management control. CEO Makoto Uchida stepped down to be replaced by Ivan Espinosa, another global CEO. And all this happened before U.S. President Donald Trump turned the global auto industry upside down by imposing 25 percent tariffs on vehicles and auto parts imported to the U.S., Nissan's biggest market.

Visiting the club to help us make sense of it all is Japan's most pre-eminent automotive analyst: Takaki Nakanishi, Analyst and CEO at the Nakanishi Research Institute.
