“And when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Make heaven drowsy with the harmony.”
A young king and three of his male friends swear to shut themselves away from the world and the distractiong company of women for three years to devote their time to study and self-improvement. But... Enter a French princess with three charming, intelligent ladies... Something has to give! Join the fun of Shakespeare’s vibrant, playful and high-energy comedy about the idealism of youth and the difference between the appearance and reality of love. Sometimes described as his most intellectual comedy, it’s a world of verbal gymnastics provided by a host of lively characters, including a rustic clown, a ‘fantastical’ bragging Spaniard, a pedantic schoolteacher, a sycophantic curate, and a dull constable named Dull.
“They have been at a great feast of languages, and stolen the scraps.”
The production to be screened is part of the BBC Shakespeare Collection, first broadcast in 1985. The director Elijah Moshinsky used an 18th century setting, which meant lots of male wigs. The King is played by Jonathan Kent, the Princess by Maureen Lipman, Berowne by Mike Gwilym (previously seen as Pericles and Aufidius), Rosaline by Jenny Agutter (The Railway Children), Don Armado by David Warner, Holofernes by satirist John Wells, and Marcade by Valentine Dyall (The Man in Black) in his final TV appearance.
There is a cash bar. Drink tickets are available at the Front Desk.
Ticket prices: 4,950 yen for members, 5,500 yen for guests (includes lunch and tax)
