Written around 1592 and printed six times in the poet’s lifetime, has been called Shakespeare’s first ever dramatic success.  As the sequel to the three parts of Henry VI, it is also the finale to his history plays about the Wars of the Roses, which conclude with the House of Tudor seizing the monarchy from the rival Houses of Lancaster (the Red Rose) and York (the White Rose).

Richard is depicted as both physically ugly and ethically evil.  He has already been seen to murder two royal rivals in Henry VI Part 3, and now he continues his ruthless, murderous scheme to gain the crown.  His famous line, “A horse! a horse! My kingdom for a horse!” comes during the turmoil of the last moments of his downfall.  To what extent, though, is Shakespeare’s description accurate, and to what extent is it politically, diplomatically distorted to flatter the Tudors and their reigning representative, Queen Elizabeth I?

The presenter recently visited Leicester in central England, where Richard’s body was excavated in 2012 and re-interred in a fine tomb in Leicester Cathedral.  He will speak not only about the play itself, but also indicate in what ways these latest discoveries show that Shakespeare got it right – or wrong.

"narcissistic and supremely arrogant", "grotesque sense of entitlement", "despises [women] far more than desires them", "divides the world into winners and losers" - modern political power struggles foreseen four centuries ago!!
