The FCCJ is 100% open and Saturday Night Live will resume its exciting schedule on July 4th. We are happy to announce longtime supporter and SNL headliner Jonathan Katz will join us with his DUO DYNAMIQUE!
New York native Jonathan Katz discovered jazz at 11 and played with Count Basie Orchestra great Frank Foster and other jazz giants in his teens. He has performed with famed jazz artists Ray Brown, Lew Tabackin, and Eddie Henderson, with the NHK Symphony and Tokyo Philharmonic, and with enka superstar Itsuki Hiroshi. He is leader of Tokyo Big Band, a 19-piece ensemble that performs his compositions and innovative arrangements of Japanese traditional songs, pianist in the Disney World Beat big band, and occasional arranger for bossa nova singer Lisa Ono.
Joining Jonathan will be flutist Makiyo Sakai. After graduating from Osaka Kyoiku University with a major in music, Makiyo went on to win awards at several classical music competitions before debuting with major Japanese independent label Pony Canyon in 2016 and releasing her first two albums as a bandleader. Makiyo is now one of Japan’s top jazz flutists with a busy schedule of 250 concerts a year in Tokyo and the Japanese countryside. In addition to television and radio appearances, her growing popularity is making her a highly sought-after support member for artists in a wide range of genres, including Jazz, Pop and Enka.
DUO ORGANIQUE was born from Jonathan’s desire to form duos with an organic sound and a wide range of expressive moods. It is a spontaneous combination of empathetic musical minds rather than a preconceived approach. Listening to each other intently, the duo’s improvisations travel to interesting places on an adventurous musical journey.
