The Push to Create a Japanese A.I.
Daisuke Okanohara, Co-Founder and CEO, Preferred Networks, Inc.
14:00-15:00 Wednesday, October 28, 2026
Language: The speech will be in English, and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
"Can Japan Build Its Own AI Future? The Race for Sovereign Generative AI and Japan's Industrial Competitiveness"
Japan has begun to invest heavily in so-called sovereign A.I., an effort to create indigenous artificial intelligence systems that don't have to rely on the most advanced models created overseas, mainly in the United States and China. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to unveil a national A.I. strategy by year-end that may also address safety concerns over rogue models and other security risks.
Against this backdrop, the FCCJ is pleased to welcome Daisuke Okanohara, the co-founder and CEO of Preferred Networks, one of Japan's leading A.I. companies. Launched in 2014, the company develops chips for A.I. as well as networks and generative A.I. models.
He will speak with us about the recent push to create a Japanese A.I. such as the creation of Noetra, a government-backed company supported by a consortium of 44 companies and organizations including Preferred Networks. Okanohara, who holds a Ph.D. in computer science, will also address the current state and competitiveness of A.I. development in Japan, its social and industrial applications, potential security uses and future prospects.
Come for a timely look at Japan's efforts to catch up in a technology that will increasingly shape the future.
