For the month of October, the FCCJ welcomes the exhibition of photographer and baker extraordinaire Kazuaki Ono and his Southern Crust exhibition. For this unique series, Aki has combined his talents as a successful commercial photographer and head baker and owner of AKIPAN, and his great love for Australia, to create an entertaining exhibition featuring various forms of bread highlighted in the diverse nature of the Australian landscape. The exhibition title was inspired by the constellation Southern Cross, which appears in the night sky Down Under.

Boasting a 38-year career as a photographer, Aki opened his AKIPAN bakery in Sydney in 2023. Guided by the theme of offering authentic Japanese bread, his products were warmly embraced by locals and tourists alike. Aki says that “This is my first attempt to bring my two passions together, and to do only what I can do.” Each time he travels across Australia for photography assignments, he encounters remarkable bakeries that not only offer bread of outstanding quality but also serve as community hubs. Southern Crust seeks to select these little-known but exceptional bakeries from all over the country, and capture their signature loaves in photographs of equally high artistry and quality. Furthermore, by portraying the character of the places where these bakeries are rooted—through perspectives never before seen—I aim to create a truly one-of-a-kind archive.
Aki enthuses that, “Running AKIPAN as both the owner and head baker has given me a unique perspective, balancing the creativity of photography with the craftsmanship of breadmaking. Just as the Australian-born Flat White has become part of coffee culture worldwide, I believe Australian bakery culture is also developing in a unique way. Through this project, my aim is to convey and reveal this evolving culture to a Japanese audience, using photography and storytelling in a way that has never been done before.”

サザン・クラスト南天の下 パンを作る写真家

10月の展示会ではFCCJは写真家でありながらパン職人にもなった小野一秋氏と、彼の代表作「サザンクラスト」展を開催いたします。
商業写真家として活躍し、ベイカリーAKIPANを立ち上げた小野氏は、このユニークなシリーズで、オーストラリアの多様な自然の中で、様々な形のパンを際立たせる、魅力的な展覧会を創り上げました。
写真展タイトルは、オーストラリアの夜空に浮かぶ南十字星にちなんでいます。

写真家歴38年超の小野氏（アキ）は、2023年にシドニーにベーカリー「AKIPAN」をオープン。「本物の日本のパン」というテーマを掲げ、地元の人々やシェフ、観光客に温かく受け入れられてきました。
「この 2つの情熱を融合させ、自分だけができることだけをやろうと思ったのが、初めての試みでした」と小野氏は語ります。
撮影でオーストラリア各地を旅するたびに、質の高いパンを提供するだけでなく、コミュニティの中心としても機能する、素晴らしいベーカリーに出会います。
Southern Crust展は、オーストラリア各地から、知られざる個性豊かなベーカリーを厳選し、それぞれのパンを、芸術性とクオリティを兼ね備えた写真で捉えることを目指しています。
さらに、これまで見たことのない視点から、ベーカリーが根付く土地の個性を捉えることで、唯一無二のアーカイブを目指します。
小野さんは「オーナー兼ヘッドベーカーとしてAKIPANを経営することで、写真の創造性とパン作りの職人技を両立させるという独自の視点を持つことができました。
オーストラリア生まれのフラットホワイトが世界中のコーヒー文化に浸透したように、オーストラリアのベーカリー文化も独自の発展を遂げていると思います。
このプロジェクトを通して、写真とストーリーテリングという、これまでにない方法で、進化するこの文化を日本の人々に伝え、発信していきたいと思っています」と熱く語ります。
