THE COMING REVOLUTION IN DIGITAL MONEY

A great wave of digitalisation is sweeping the world and nowhere will its impact be felt more strongly than in the area of monetary policy and currencies.

With the aid of leading experts, Deep Dive will take an in-depth look at the digital money evolution or revolution in two successive events.

The first of these (on March 11th) will look at the issues involved in a broad or "global" context while the second (on March 24th) will focus on the "business" aspects of situation with particular regard to Japan.

On March 11th we will examine what are Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and how these will coexist with Private Digital Currencies or Private Payment Service Providers (PSPs).

What role will "crypto currencies" (Bitcoin, Etherium and others) play in the digital money transformation?

How will digital money impact "fiat" or government-issued currencies and cash transactions? The implications of the digital money era for monetary policy (inflation etc.) and for the internationalisation of currencies.

Our expert panelists on March 11th will include:

  • Hiromi Yamaoka, Former Director-General of the Bank of Japan’s Payment and Settlement Systems Department and an internationally-acknowledged authority on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
  • Sayuri Shirai, Professor of Economics, Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University and a former member of the Bank of Japan's Policy Board.
  • Naoyoki Iwashita, Professor of monetary economics and FinTech in the graduate programme for public policy studies at Kyoto University and Advisor for the crypto-asset task force at the Financial Services Agency.
