Takeshi Doi, Senior Researcher, Application Laboratory, JAMSTEC
11:00-12:00 Wednesday, June 12, 2024
Language: The speech will be in English and Q & A will be in English or Japanese with English interpretation
Last summer saw record-breaking high temperatures in Japan and throughout Asia. This year is already heating up, with deadly heatwaves scorching Southeast Asia, India and Pakistan.
How hot is it going to get in Japan this year and in the near future?
And what, if anything, can the country do to mitigate the impact?
At this FCCJ press conference, two climate scientists will discuss how heatwaves and other climate change effects are already upon us.
Seita Emori, of the University of Tokyo's Institute for Future Initiatives, was a lead author for the 5th and 6th Assessment Reports compiled by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He will give a global overview of the impact on the climate if the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement is not achieved.
Takeshi Doi, a senior researcher at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), focuses on seasonal predictions. He will discuss how hot this summer might get, how it will affect people and what Japan and other countries can do to mitigate the heat's impact.
