FCCJ is proud to welcome two former Prime Ministers for a very special event. Once political rivals, Junichiro Koizumi, the maverick, popular reformist who served as Liberal Democratic Party prime minister from 2001 to 2006, and Naoto Kan, the Democratic Party of Japan prime minister at the time of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku quake, tsunami, and Fukushima triple meltdown, are now allies in the quest to get Japan out of nuclear power. Previously a strong supporter of nuclear power, Koizumi became a trenchant critic of Japan's efforts to continue with it after 3.11, saying that he'd been lied to about its safety and cost-effectiveness. Kan, as prime minister, fought with Japan's nuclear and fossil fuel lobbies in the government and got a feed-in tariff system passed by the Diet that launched Japan's renewable energy sector. As the world prepares to commemorate 10 years since 3.11, join us as Koizumi and Kan speak about nuclear power politics in Japan and efforts to move to renewable energy sources.
