The full text will be posted shortly.The government says a revised immigration bill set to be discussed in the Diet next month will make life easier for those detained under Japan's strict immigration laws, allowing some to be released into the community instead of being locked up in one of Japan's grim detention centers. However, the penalties for those who breach the immigration laws will be made more severe.
Critics say reform is well overdue. On March 6, a 33-year-old Sri Lankan woman reportedly died of "emaciation" at a Japanese detention center in Nagoya despite her pleas for food and medical care from the authorities detaining her. This shocking event is the latest example of the desperate circumstances of detainees in Japan.
To discuss these issues, a representative of Nagoya-based volunteer group START, who tried to intervene on behalf of the Sri Lankan woman, will come to the Club. Also speaking are lawyer Shoichi Ibusuki and Makoto Iwahashi of NPO Posse.
