Former Special Representatives of the Secretary-General of the United Nations

The speech and Q & A will be in English.

During his visit to Washington D.C. in mid-April, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga issued a joint statement with U.S. President Joe Biden condemning violence committed by the Myanmar military and police against civilians. The two sides promised to continue to work for an immediate cessation of the violence, the release of those who have been detained, and for Myanmar to swiftly return to democracy. But since the coup d'etat by the military on February 1st, Japan has faced domestic and international criticism that its response has been largely rhetorical.

There are calls for Tokyo to place sanctions on, or take other concrete actions against, Myanmar as others, including the U.S., the European Union, and South Korea have done. On Friday, some of Japan's most distinguished former diplomats will speak to FCCJ on five steps Japan should take to stabilize the situation in Myanmar and resolve its internal violence. These recommendations were submitted to Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi earlier this week.
