PRESS CONFERENCE
Sabr S. Yessimbekov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Japan

14:00-15:00 Friday, January 21, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Aftermath of the Protests in Kazakhstan

Anti-government protests flared across Kazakhstan in January, as a doubling of fuel prices and allegations of corruption prompted thousands of people to take to the streets. The response from the government was to impose a shoot-to-kill policy and to call on neighboring Russia for help, which came in the form of a military deployment.

Ambassador Yessimbekov has agreed to update us on the latest developments in his homeland and what they mean for the region and the world. While the former Soviet republic has a population of only 19 million, it’s rich in oil and uranium and boasts a land mass the size of Western Europe
