PRESS CONFERENCE

"Rengo's new female leader"
Tomoko Yoshino, President of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (RENGO)

11:00-12:00 Friday, October 22, 2021
(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

Rengo, Japan's biggest labor organization, recently picked Tomoko Yoshino as its first ever female chief. On being elected, Yoshino said that Japanese women continue to face a glass ceiling and many are forced to drop out of the labor market.

The group, known formally as the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, is a backer of two opposition parties -- the main Constitutional Democratic Party, and the smaller Democratic Party for the People. Yoshino has called on the parties to "become one entity" to break the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's grip on power.

Yoshino's group has about 7 million members. She will come to the FCCJ to discuss women's labor issues, the upcoming election and Japan's stagnant wage growth.

Yoshino was vice president of the organization for six years. She has served at the Japanese Association of Metal, Machinery and Manufacturing Workers.
