"Unlocking the True Value of Japanese Anime"
Anime is undeniably one of Japan's strongest soft power assets to have enthralled the world, with titles such as Slam Dunk, Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, and One Piece boasting legions of fans worldwide. It is also a key pillar of Japan's cultural content exports alongside manga and games, for which the Japanese government had set an ambitious target in June under its revised 'Cool Japan' strategy. Japan wants to quadruple the market export value from 4.7 trillion yen in 2022 to 20 trillion yen by 2033.
But the exact size of the anime market and its potential has been difficult to pin down, no thanks to threats such as piracy. The Cultural Affairs Agency, having waged a long war against unscrupulous copyright infringement, said on December 3 that it will budget 300 million yen on an artificial intelligence project to trawl the Internet to identify piracy websites, and work with foreign law enforcement to bring those involved to justice.
Parrot Analytics, which specialises in data research for the entertainment industry and a partner of the media consultancy Global Connects, is conducting studies to determine the exact size and potential of the anime market, with the support of a publisher in The Association of Japanese Animations.
To shed some light on the anime industry, the FCCJ will welcome Macoto Tezka, a luminary in the anime and manga scene whose father is the "Godfather of Manga", Osamu Tezuka of 'Black Jack' fame. Tezka will be joined by Douglas Montgomery, of Global Connects Media, who has over two decades of experience as an analyst in the entertainment industry, including 16 years at Warner Bros.
