PRESS CONFERENCE

“What a Taiwan crisis would mean for Japan and the region”

Amanda Hsiao, Senior Analyst for China, Crisis Group

11:00-12:00 Friday, September 9, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

A Taiwan crisis would lead to an emergency for Japan -- that is the new mantra for ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers when they talk about a possible Chinese invasion of the island.

Amanda Hsiao, a China expert at the International Crisis Group think tank, will speak about how what such a scenario would mean for Japan and the wider region.

From her posting in Taiwan, she assesses the dynamics and risks of escalation in the Taiwan Strait. This week, the Princeton-educated expert is in Tokyo to exchange views with Japanese experts and officials about the future of what The Economist once called "the most dangerous place on Earth."

Amanda's work focuses on conflicts in which China plays an important role, and developments in China's foreign policy that relate to conflict prevention and resolution. She previously managed the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue's China program in Beijing, overseeing projects related to the South China Sea, U.S.-China relations, and China's evolving approach to conflict mediation.
