William Lazonick, Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts
11:00-12:00 Wednesday, January 29, 2025
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)
Why the United States is lagging in critical technologies
As Donald Trump begins his second term as U.S. president, the world is watching how he will respond to America's economic challenges, especially in its technology sector. While the Trump administration has no shortage of advisors connected to Wall Street, William Lazonick, Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, warns that Wall Street's emphasis on a "divest and distribute" strategy creates more problems than solutions for reinvestment in critical technologies.
Professor Emeritus Lazonick's research was used by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren in her plan to regulate private equity. His latest book, "Predatory Value Extraction", will soon be published in Japanese. Please join Professor Emeritus Lazonick at the FCCJ as he makes his argument for being wary of Wall Street leading an American resurgence in investments in critical technologies.
