Hiroshima and the Olympics

International Olympic President Thomas Bach paid a visit to Hiroshima on July 16th, calling it a city of peace and saying was reaffirming the Olympic movement's peace mission. The controversial visit raised questions about whether the IOC was using Hiroshima to campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize. But the IOC rejected calls from Hiroshima for Tokyo Olympics participants to observe a one minute of silence at 8:15 on August 6th, in remembrance of the 76th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb. Still, former Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, in an August 3rd letter to Bach and Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics Organizing Committee Chairperson Seiko Hashimoto is urging that participants at the stadium and other facilities hold a one-minute silent vigil. Please join us for a press conference with former Mayor Akiba, as he talks about the IOC and Hiroshima
