Prince Pericles embarks on a 16-year odyssey around the Near East. His travels bring him face to face with a veritable Shakespearean variety of mishaps involving incest, shipwrecks, famine, separation from his wife and child, revival of a corpse, attempted murder, kidnapping, and life in a brothel. But there is a touchingly happy ending to it all. One of the Bard’s last plays, possibly written in collaboration with a writer who also ran a brothel, this was one of the most well-loved plays in Shakespeare’s lifetime, to be often performed and reprinted. Its main source is the late 14th-century John Gower’s Confessio Amantis, which in its time vied with Chaucer in popularity; Gower himself is revived by Shakespeare to act as Chorus, providing a commentary to every act.
As usual with the Bard, there are events and circumstances that seem surprisingly relevant to our own time, while there are others that reveal how society dealt with human problems in different ways 400 years ago.
This event will be the final one in this lengthy series of Saturday Lunches with Shakespeare, but another series is now under preparation. Please keep an eye out for further announcements.
