THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Celebrate Shakespeare’s April 23rd birthday by attending “The Merchant of Venice” on April 24th, the next in our Saturday Lunch with Shakespeare series. The play is a "comedy", focused on an unpopular Jewish moneylender (Shylock) seeking revenge against a Christian merchant who has defaulted on a loan.
The BBC version was produced by Jack Gold and directed by Jonathan Miller. The production features John Franklyn-Robbins as Antonio, John Nettles as Bassanio and Gemma Jones as Portia. Comedian Warren Mitchell plays Shylock.
Our guest presenter is Stuart Varnam-Atkin, one of our regular contributors. A long-term Japan resident, Oxford-educated Stuart has carved out a unique career in Japanese media-related activities, including writing, translation, narrating, acting and TV work.
Tickets for a Venetian-themed lunch are 2,500 yen for members and students (2,750 yen including tax) and 3,000 yen for non-members (3,300 yen including tax). There is a cash bar. Drink tickets are available from the Front Desk. Cancellations after 6 p.m. Monday, April 19, will be charged in full. Please make reservations through the Front Desk (03-3211-3161).
Doors open 11:45. Lunch from 12:00. The play, with a short intermission for dessert and coffee, will end by approximately 4.30 p.m.
Please cooperate with the Club’s Covid-19 prevention measures and wear a mask (but not necessarily Venetian!).
